Now Matt Cerrone at Metsblog gives us the news that Mr. Beltran and his battered knees is “looking forward to baseball activities.” So are we, Carlos!
Maybe when Beltran comes back, we won’t have to watch Jerry Manuel sit Angel Pagan in the primetime TV Sunday night rubber match with the phreaking Phillies so he can get Gary Matthews Jr. a few at bats – like it’s a mid-March split squad game.
Maybe when Beltran comes back, his commanding presence will force Manuel not to leave the team’s ace pitcher in to get pounded by the Phils on a clear off night for his fastball and breaking stuff, sitting on his hands instead of reaching for the bullpen phone to preserve just a little of Johan Santana’s mojo.
Maybe when Beltran comes back, the impact on the lineup will erase any possibility of Manuel starting Fernando Tatis over his young star first-baseman, so he can get Tatis. a few at bats – like it’s a mid-March split squad game instead of a primetime TV Sunday night rubber match with the phreaking Phillies.
Maybe Beltran makes Jose Reyes flatten out his swing and stop hitting useless pop-ups all over the National League. Maybe Beltran helps David Wright’s obvious new swing hitch and hideous strikeout rate. Maybe Beltran shows a lost Jason Bay the way.
Yet in Florida, the updates and doctors’ appointment and delays continue. Says Beltran: ““Physically, I’m in good shape. I feel strong. I’m looking forward to running outside and doing things related to baseball, like in a game. Running is the thing that will dictate everything.”
And with the Mets once more swirling the drain in the National League East, you can’t blame fans for thinking Beltran’s return is everything. (Yet it may well be very limited – update from the terrific Mack’s Mets).
