Sunday Night Reading: Your Mets Blog Notes

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 28: Former New York Mets...

Busy Easter Sunday around here, so we’re going with an all-prediction version of our weekly Mets blogfest – a pre-opener lightning round. Here goes!

Kranepool: “So where do I think our beloved Metsies will finish ? Believe me I ‘d love to say the Mets will be a positive surprise this season but I doubt they will even be a .500 team. The Mets and Nats will fight it out for 4th place.”

Tanya Mercado: “I dare you to dream about a playoff berth. I dare you to dream about the Mets overcoming all the odds and doing things this year you never thought they could do.”

Jason Fry: “The 2010 Mets look like a disaster in the making. At this point it’s useless to carp that it didn’t have to be this way, so I will resolutely fix my gaze ahead, to where the view is no more encouraging. I’ll give it until about May 15 before towels start getting thrown in, and June 15 before the incurable optimists experience a medical breakthrough.”

Joe Janish: “…only a fool would bat Alex Cora leadoff, and Mike Jacobs ahead of Jason Bay.”

Brian Miller: “[I would] suggest that Omar, and Jerry for that matter, are being set up to fail.  Not that the Wilpons want to fail, just that they looked around and decided they didn’t want to expend the necessary resources to fix the flawed team, so they kept Omar and Jerry around knowing they would make great scapegoats if the Mets had another disappointing season.”

Russell Zanca: “Well, imagine my good feelings being squelched this morning when I leafed through the Times Sports section to find George Vecsey’s column, telling Mets fans to abandon all hope in Dante’s classic sense from the Inferno. Not the kind of literary invocation any of us needs before the 2010 MLB season has started. The columnist doesn’t really share any gloomily original thoughts, but affirms what a lot of us have been arguing about on MMO since February: the pitching staff is a shambles before we even run out of the gates.”

Coop: “I’d like to say this is an 85-win team/Wild Card contender…however…my gut tells me…no more than 80 wins and just missing the playoffs. And yes, I’m referring to the Mets.”

Kingman: “While I do not at this moment share the optimism many feel for this team’s current chances to win 90+ games and play in those pesky and elusive meaningful October games, I most definitely vehemently disagree with those who assert that we need a “rebuilding” year, or the even more unreasonable folk who claim that the “window” for this group is closed or closing.”

Dave Doyle: “There are so many questions marks on this roster. This was a 70-win team last season and Jason Bay is the only major change. It’s a big gamble the Mets are making to go into the season with so many players that couldn’t play up to their potential last year.”
