Last night, the Mets set an all-time attendance record for Citi Field – a mere 25,684 bought tickets to watch Oliver Perez have his usual fine outing, in this case versus the extra-tough Chicago Cubs, a team with a somnolent near-retiree running things from the dugout and a patched over squad of has-beens and malcontents.
The joy of the dawning of the Ike Davis Era has already faded, despite the first-sacker’s spectacular catch of a foul pop falling in the Mets dugout.
Yes, the Mets have their bright spots: Davis, the emergence of Angel Pagan, the renaissance of Mike Pelfrey. They fixed up Citi Field quite a bit too. But their big hitters aren’t hitting, the starting pitching is thin, the bullpen is already fraying and management is terrible.
Let’s not forget the Mets are still managed by a guy who batted Frank Catalonotto in the clean-up spot. Frank Catalonotto…who replaced Mike Jacobs in the four hole. Gangsta hunches.
So the Mets are 6-9 and setting records for low attendance in their gorgeous, brand new ballpark. The face of the franchise, David Wright, is a strikeout machine with throwing problems who is rapidly regressing in his late 20s instead of exploding. Yet the Mets Express rolls blithely on, seemingly content with Omar Minaya at the helm. Watch for a pitching coach firing or a lineup shakeup. Personally, I’m headed for the Shake Shack line where I can still commisserate with the only dense crowd of Mets fans at Citi Field and watch the actual game from the corner of my eye on the video screens.
