Warming Up at Citi Field

Huge news about the Mets bullpen today. And the visitors bullpen too. In fact, it’s news about all the bullpennage at Citi Field. You see, thanks to intrepid CBS traffic reporter Tom Kaminski, we now know what the reconfigured bullpens will look like in 2010. (No, we still don’t know if Jenrry Mejia will be warming up there).

You see, during the Mets opening season at Citi Field the, er, team on the actual field didn’t, er, do enough to keep the restless faithful from complaining rather vocally about certain aspects of the new place. Some complained about partial views, others hated the ads or the weird outfield fence. But I hated the bullpens, which had the home team warming up in front by the actual field, while the visitors were behind some cheap chain link behind that and under the centerfield bridge. On top of that, the plexiglass walls were blocked by cheap ads and the team hung some tarps straight outta Home Depot over the pitchers’ heads to ostensibly stop fans from dumping on ‘em.

It was ugly as hell, the worst bullpen configuration in the majors – even though there’s a nifty pavilion along the Roosevelt Avenue side where you could watch the pitchers warm up while grazing at a picnic table or getting a few snapshots in front of the old Shea homerun apple. So the Mets actually listened to the criticism and decided to entirely reconstruct the pens – and Kaminki’s eye in the sky reveals how they’ll do it. Catchers will squat with their backs to the field and the relief staff will each have a small, covered shack to watch the game from. No more tarps, and we’re officially begging for no more hideous ads. All in all, a huge improvement. (And oh yeah, they’re changing the homerun line in centerfield to an even eight feet all across, bringing an end to the strange job in the new apple container).

Now let’s hope K-Rod’s goggles really improve the Mets bullpen.
