Sunday Night Reading: Blog Notes

PORT ST LUCIE, FL - FEBRUARY 26: Jose Reyes #...

Week two of spring training has come and gone and the news is mixed for the Mets – surprising prospect strength but struggles from Pelfrey and Perez, and the strange medical news on Jose Reyes – while for the Yanks, it’s all about the battles for the final rotation and roster spots, minor issues for the power-packed defending champs. We’ve been all over the best blogs this week for some interesting angles on New York baseball:

At i-Yankees, Chris Harihar thinks “it’s somewhat cowardly for Brian Cashman to essentially fault Igawa for his ineffectual state” after a less-than-positive official spin in a Times piece on the Yanks’ former stud-to-be.

Tonight’s Oscar night, and the great Bronx Banter blog reports that there’s a film in development about one of the – er – more interesting moments in Yankees’ history. Yes, The Trade will portray the lives of Yank hurlers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, who famously swapped wives in 1973. The leads roles are apparently going to to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Mets Report runs down the bad news in Port St. Lucie this week, from Mike Lupica’s typically snide guilt-by-association character assassination of Jose Reyes over the thyroid problem,  to updates on Beltran, Castillo and the rest.

Andrew Vazzano warns readers of the ‘Ropolitans blog about getting too crazy about the early spring exploits of young dudes like Fernando Martinez. Course, then he reel off this line: “Yes, Fernando Martinez is hitting .667 / .667 / 1.333, but he’s only had 12 ABs.  Yes, he went 4-4 yesterday.  Yes, he hit two home runs.” Hard not to project, Andrew.

Matt Tracy says Mets fans should get to know the name Jenrry Mejia and who are we to disagree? The 20-year-old kid with the cutting fastball is blowing away spring training hitters and “if he keeps it up, it will be one interesting opening day roster.”

Finally, Shannon Shark has all the brutal photos and links on the still-ongoing (and culturally horrific) destruction of the real Yankee Stadium. What a disgrace to New York.
