An Opposing View: Bring Mejia North

How many of the Mets bloggers outraged that Jerry Manuel is considering using the rare talent of Jenrry Mejia in short relief ahd ever heard of the 20-year-old Dominican hurler before this spring? I ask that question because the judgment that the Mets are somehow “rushing” Mejia by putting him the bullpen in Queens seems nearly universal.

So much so that a group of fans actually plans a formal protest against the Mejia move, demonstrating at SNY studios in Rockefeller Center today and tomorrow. Here’s the call to arms of the Mets’ own Plea Party:

Jerry Manuel wants to make Jenrry Mejia a relief pitcher for the 2009 season. This is a huge mistake! Mejia has all the makings of a very promising starting pitcher–a conversion to relief could very well hurt his development.

What we’re doing is standing in the window of SNY’s SportsNite with signs protesting the call up. Maybe, just maybe, the Mets brass will see that not all fans are on board with the call up, and will reconsider.

Yes, hold those signs! Wave those placards! C’mon folks, this is silly. It smacks of the kind of over-heated obsession with protecting some imagined or projected future that too many fans (and some organizations) fall into.

I say: bring the kid up now.

Sure, he may fail. But what’s a JetBlue ticket to Buffalo cost, $49? If Mejia and his mid-90s cutting fastball can solidify, say, some 6th and 7th innings and get the Mets a few extra wins so they can hold on long enough to grab a starting arm at the deadline, well then I say do it. We don’t need “Jenrry Rules” at Citi Field. Let the kid pitch.

I totally agree with you. These fans are nuts. First of all, as I wrote today in re: Joba, pitching in relief is a time honored way for guys who become starters to break into the bigs, "retarding their development" my ass. Second, I think the Mets might actually project Mejia more as a reliever--with two power pitches--than as a starter anyway. The only worry I would have would be about the kid's arm--how elastic is it? Has he pitched relief on multiple days at any level? etc
